Beijing. April 3. Silkroadnews - Shanghai has begun a trial run of driverless trains on its first automated metro line, becoming the third Chinese city to introduce the unmanned system to its tracks, South China Morning Post reports.
Automatic trains were launched on the Pujian line and increased the city’s metro network from 666 km to 672 km. 6 stations are located along the 6.7 km line. At present, six staff members work at each station, but their number is planned to be reduced to 1-2.
The technology allows passengers to look out of windows at the front and rear of the trains, as they are controlled remotely. They have a smart energy management system and rubber tires to minimize noise, the metro operator said, the report says.
The unmanned trains also have a smaller turning radius, which gives them greater flexibility.
