Almaty. January 8. Silkroadnews - Sunday in Sydney has become the hottest day in 79 years; temperature hit 47.3°С, the Kyrgyz Telegraph Agency (KyrTAG) reports with reference to BBC news.
The authorities warn of the danger in the whole area of Sydney. Residents are prohibited from lighting fires and frying in the street.
Sunday’s temperatures fell short of the scorching heat to hit the area in 1939, when the mercury reached 47.8°C, the report reads.
ABC reported that the missionary religious charity Mission Australia helped deliver homeless people to hospitals and shelters so that they would not stay outside under such heat.
In the state of New South Wales, about 7,000 homes were left without electricity, in part because of extreme heat, the Sydney Morning Herald writes.
Meanwhile, an international cricket match takes place in Sydney between England and Australia. The thermometer at the stadium showed 57°С. English players are certainly not used to playing with such heat.
France’s tennis player Kristina Mladenovic apologized to her fans for refusing to continue the match with Australia’s Ellen Perez.
“43 degrees but probably 50 on court when started,” Mladenovic tweeted, adding: “I’m sorry to the fans, I think it’s the first time in my career I retired [from] a match.”
