Almaty. September 5. Silkroadnews – Sweden deports a 106-year-old Afghan refugee, British Independent reported.
“Sweden is set to deport a blind 106-year-old Afghan refugee who is believed to be the world’s oldest asylum seeker”, report said.
“Bibikhal Uzbek was 105 years old when her son and grandsons carried her on their backs as they traversed rock-strewn mountain paths from Kunduz in northeastern Afghanistan through Iran and Turkey in the hope of seeking refuge in Europe in 2015”, publication reads.
The Swedish migration agency, as reported, rejected B. Uzbek, who is about to turn 107 years old, in granting asylum and ordered her to return to Afghanistan. The agency considers the hometown of B. Uzbek’s family – Kunduz – where severe clashes occur between Afghan security forces and the Taliban – to be quite safe for the entire family to return.
After getting rejection on application for asylum in Skaraborg county on the western coast of Sweden in June, the woman suffered a stroke and is now totally bedbound and unable to see, speak, or walk.
Her family members say she is physically unable to survive the trip to Afghanistan and appealed to let her stay in Sweden to live there her last days.
“I do not understand why? A hundreds and six years old. She doesn’t see, she doesn’t speak, she doesn’t walk. She’s sick. I don’t understand, why? Why turn her down? In Afghanistan, there is war, there is death, problems with the Taliban and with Isil now. I don’t understand why they want us to go back. Many people have died this year”, B.Uzbek’s grandson Mohammad Uzbek said.
In turn, the Swedish migration agency said the advanced age is not in itself a ground for granting asylum.
