Dushanbe. Aprill 16. Silkroadnews –Tajik Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister (who happens to be President Rahmon’s daughter) derussified her name. Her name used to be Ozoda Emomaliyevna Rahmonova. How now she is Rahmon Ozoda Emomali. This is reported on the MFa’s webpage.
Her father himself changed his name from russified Rahmonov Emomali Sharifovich to a more Tajik Emomali Rahmon in 2007. Ever since then Russian endings of “ov”, “yev” and “ovich” started disappearing from people’s name.
However, there are plenty of cases when people return to russified versions of their names.
At the end of January, Tajik Prosecutor General, Sherhon Salimzoda called Tajiks with russified names “non-patriots”. He claimed that their return to Russian style of their last and middle names signifies their lack of patriotism and national identity.
At the same time, Tajiks who go back to Russian-styled names do it in a bid to avoid problems in Russia.
As reported earlier, every 7th Tajik leaves to Russia to become a guest worker every year. They say it is more practical (workwise as well as in terms of living) to have a more Russian name there.
Meanwhie, most Tajik senior public servants derussified their names.
