Tajikistan will require over $2 billion to fully provide the population with drinking water

Almaty. January 13. Silkroadnews – Tajikistan will require more than $2 billion to fully provide the population with drinking water, Tajik Telegraph Agency (TajikTA) reports.

“It will require more than $2 billion to fully provide the population with drinking water in Tajikistan. These funds are planned to be raised using the assistance of the international financial institutions, as the country’s budget does not allow for own funds for these purposes”, General director of the state holding company for public utilities Alimurod Islomzoda said at the press conference on Thursday.

At the same time, he noted, the arrangement to attract around $200 million for these purposes has been reached this year.

“These funds are planned to be attracted through the EBRD, ADB and the government of Japan in the form of loans and grants”, he explained.

According to A. Islomzoda, this year within the water supply program it is planned to complete a number of projects to rehabilitate water supply systems in 16 cities and districts of the country and to provide drinking water to about 1.2 million people.

He pointed out that more than 113.6 million somoni ($14.4 million) were spent for this purpose in 2016 only. The total amount of these projects launched in 2012 is around $68 million.
