Terrorists try making use of any gaps in airports security system, the ICAO officials say

Almaty. September 23. Silkroadnews –  Civil aviation remains an attractive target for terrorist groups, the participants of the Security Council ministerial meeting stated, the organization's information center reports.

«The Security Council affirms that all states have the responsibility to protect the security of citizens and nationals of all nations against terrorist attacks on air services operating within their territory», the Security Council resolution on the air transportation security says as approved at the meeting.

According to Fang Liu, the Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), terrorist groups try making use of any gaps in airport security system, she reminded of the attacks on airports in Brussels and Istanbul.

Ms. Liu also said about a series of standards, guidelines and regulations developed under the auspices of ICAO to ensure the safety of air traffic. They all have been listed in 19 Annexes to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation. These rules allow ensuring the security of passengers whose number has already achieved 3.5 billion a year. Up to 100 thousand flights are carried out throughout the world on a daily basis to deliver about 10 million passengers a day to their destinations.

In its resolution, the UN Security Council urged member states to cooperate with ICAO, strengthen control procedures, checks and screening at airports to detect and prevent terrorist attacks on civil aviation facilities.

Council members stressed the civil aviation should not be used as a transport vehicle for foreign militants. In this connection they demanded the aviation companies to provide advance passenger information to the authorities to identify individuals included in the sanctions list of the UN Security Council.
