Tehran. June 24. Silkroadnews - more than twice increased the number of tourists from developed countries who visited the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) during the first three months of the Iranian calendar year (new year in Iran begins on March 21), compared with the same period in 2013, reports agency.
"More than 23,600 foreign tourists visited Iran during the three months (from March 21 to June 21, 2014 - Silkroadnews), against 7500 tourists the same period last year," - said the deputy director of the cultural heritage, crafts and tourism of IRI Murtazo Rahmani-Muvahed.
According to him, the majority of foreign tourists were citizens of European countries, Australia, South Korea, Japan and China.
For comparison, said M. Rahmani-Muvahed, more than 4 million Shiites tourists from neighboring states visited the country last year of the Iranian calendar. According to statistics, each spent an average of about $1200 during his stay in the Islamic republic.
Some analysts have pointed out that the tendency to increase the number of tourists from western countries is a good example of the gradual warming of relations between Iran and the West with the advent to power of President Hassan Rouhani. It is reported that last year the country's revenue from tourism sector amounted to about $5 billion, this is for the first time since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. International hotels operating in Iran were in profit.
Also worth noting that the government of Hamid Rouhani recently announced plans to mitigate the visa regime and to increase the revenues from the tourism industry from the current $5 billion to $10 billion
