The UK ambassador has been appointed to Iran for the first time since 2011
Almaty. September 6. Silkroadnews – After five years break the UK re-appointed its ambassador to Iran. Nicholas Hopton was appointed the UK chargé d’affairs in Tehran.
«The upgrade in diplomatic relations gives us the opportunity to develop our discussions on a range of issues. I hope this will mark the start of more productive cooperation between our countries, enabling us to discuss more directly issues such as human rights and Iran’s role in the region, as well as ongoing implementation of the nuclear deal and the expansion of the trading relationship between both our countries», Boris Johnson, the UK foreign secretary, said.
On November 30, 2011 the British Foreign Ministry announced the closure of its embassy and evacuated its staff from Iran. Later in December all the Iranian diplomats in the UK have been recalled to their homeland as required by the British Foreign Ministry. The diplomatic relations were not entirely severed, but reduced to the lowest level possible – the parties had no embassies and diplomatic representatives. The British interests in Iran were represented by the Embassy of Sweden.
The British embassy work in Tehran was resumed only on August 23, 2015, the Iranian embassy in London was also opened last year.
