Almaty. October 28. Silkroadnews - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has decided to cancel a planned trip at the end of October in the West African countries affected by the epidemic of Ebola not to interfere with efforts to combat the outbreak, reports the Russian news agency Tass.
"The Secretary-General analyzed the costs and benefits of a possible visit. We felt that the visit of the Secretary General at the moment interfere with the work of the UN mission and divert its attention", - said in a Monday media spokesman Stefan Dyuzharrik.
According to him, serving the region emergency mission for Ebola "focuses on the delivery of the equipment to the affected countries, attracting health professionals, providing them with the necessary support".
S.Dyuzharrik noted that the administrative head of the UN is still willing to visit the region "when comes the right time".
The administrative head of the UN planned to arrive in the region on October 31 and a visit Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, to show solidarity with the peoples of those countries most affected by the epidemic.
Meanwhile, it is reported that on Sunday in West Africa with an official visit arrived the US permanent representative to the UN, Samantha Power. As reported in the press service of the permanent mission, purpose of the trip - "to demonstrate US support for these countries and their efforts to fight the deadly disease".
In turn, the official representative of the secretary general, commenting on her decision to visit the region, said that "everyone makes their own decision".
According to the World Health Organization, the number of victims of the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa has increased to almost 5 thousand people, and over 10 thousand are infected. Most of the fatal cases occur in three countries - Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
