UN Foundation to provide $150 million for development programs in Afghanistan
Beijing. February 23. Silkroadnews - The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and government of Afghanistan signed a cooperation agreement regulating the provision of assistance to the Afghan side for 10 years, the Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports.
The agreement was signed in Kabul by representatives of the UNFPA and Ministry of Economy of Afghanistan. Within the framework of the agreement the Fund will provide about $150 million to implement development projects in Afghanistan aimed at improving the quality of life of the country’s population between 2018 and 2027.
The United Nations Population Fund started its work in Afghanistan back in 1976. During the years of civil war, the UNFPA office in Afghanistan halted its operation and then reopened its office in 2002, after the overthrow of the Taliban regime.
To date, the Foundation has implemented three national programs in the country, including projects on assistance to the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Women’s Affairs, protection of reproductive health of the population, educational programs related to family planning and combating domestic violence.
