Almaty. October 26. Silkroadnews – The United States and India intend to jointly counter the growing influence of China, The Economic Times reported.
“US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday started talks with Indian leaders expected to highlight the strong alliance between the two nations, with both anxious to counter China's growing influence,” the report said.
It is noted that Tillerson arrived in India from Pakistan, where he was given a low-key reception after the U.S. statement that Islamabad supports and harbors the Taliban militants on its territory.
In New Delhi Tillerson was to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. The meeting agenda, as expected, will include discussion of strengthening the Afghan government, growing influence of China and “other security problems in Asia.”
Last week Tillerson called for deeper cooperation with India in the face of China’s growing influence in Asia and said that Washington wants to promote a “free and open” region, led by prosperous democracies.
He also said that Beijing sometimes violated international conventions, referring to the dispute over the South China Sea as an example.
India welcomed his words, saying that they “highlighted our shared commitment to a rule-based international order.”
