Almaty. July 14. Silkroadnews - The US work over sanctions against Chinese companies cooperating with North Korea, South China Morning Post reported.
“US drafting fresh sanctions against Chinese firms with ties to North Korea, sources say. Aim is to put more pressure on Beijing to rein in Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear weapons programme, according to two senior US officials”, report said.
Within a few weeks it is planned to apply sanctions against small Chinese banks and companies that doing business in Pyongyang.
The timing and scope of the planned US measures, it is reported, will mainly depend on China’s respond to pressure for tougher steps toward North Korea during the meeting on economic issues between the US and China’s officials in Washington.
According to publication, China could face US trade and economic pressure unless takes measures to exert pressure on North Korea.
For the US the so-called “secondary sanctions” now being considered are a way to apply targeted economic pressure on companies in countries that have ties to North Korea, denying them access to the US market and financial system.
The sources stressed, no final decisions have been made so far, yet being North Korea’s major trading partner China is crucial to pressure Pyongyang to deprive it of possibility of striking the US with nuclear weapons.
