Almaty. October 11. Silkroadnews – Without any explanations Kazakhstan strengthened border control at the Kordai checkpoint, the Kyrgyz Telegraph Agency (KyrTAG) reported with reference to the spokeswoman for the State Border Service of the Kyrgyz Republic, Salkyn Abdykariyeva.
“Kazakhstan, for unknown reasons, strengthened its control at the Kordai checkpoint on the border with Kyrgyzstan. The Kazakhstani side have not formally notified us on the move. This is their right though. They may tighten the control regime either notifying or not notifying us. Here we cannot give any comments on another country’s border guards actions. From the Kyrgyz side, there are neither restrictions nor obstacles,” the spokeswoman said.
The checkpoint on the Kyrgyz-Kazakhstani border (from the Kyrgyz side - Ak Zhol, from the Kazakhstani side - Kordai) is located 25km from Bishkek. This is the major crossing point between the two states. The witnesses say, at the moment there are more than 300 vehicles have gathered at the border, some of them waiting in line for three hours.
According to the border service of the Kyrgyz Republic, nearly 20,000 people and 2,000 vehicles cross the “Ak Zhol” checkpoint every day. During the summer season, the number of people crossing the border reaches 37 thousand.
