Almaty. November 10. Silkroadnews - According to Saudi Arabia’s attorney general Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb, in recent decades the country’s treasury missed at least $100 billion as a result of systematic corruption and theft, the Kazakh Telegraph Agency (KazTAG) reports referring to the BBC Russian Service.
199 people are being held for questioning as a part of large-scale anti-corruption campaign that began on Saturday, he said.
Reportedly, among those suspected are senior princes, government ministers and influential businessmen.
Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb also said the campaign did not violate normal course of business activity in the country, only personal bank accounts of some individuals have been frozen.
The investigation, which is conducted by a specially created royal decree by the highest anti-corruption commission, is moving very quickly. The commission is headed by the 32-year-old Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, who was appointed heir to the throne less than six months ago.
“208 individuals had been called in for questioning so far, and that seven of them had been released without charge,” the publication reads.
According to some reports, among the detainees are the billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, a son of the late king who was also removed from his post as National Guard chief.
To remind, 11 princes of the ruling family were detained on suspicion of corruption in Saudi Arabia on November 4. The arrest of members of the royal dynasty became a part of a large anti-corruption campaign deployed in the country.
