710 people have been accused of cybercrimes since the beginning of the year in China
Almaty. October 26. Silkroadnews – 710 people have been accused of cybercrimes since the beginning of the year in China, People’s Daily reports.
“In the first nine months of 2017, a total of 710 people were charged with committing online crimes, an increase of 80.7 percent year-on-year, according to China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), with 334 of the cases indicted, for an increase of 82.5 percent,” the report said.
It is noted that China has strengthened its fight against online crimes recently, especially after the death of Xu Yuyu, an 18-year-old girl who died in August 2016 cause of cardiac arrest after cyber mongers stole 9,900 yuan ($1,495) of her university tuition.
In July this year, the main defendant in Xu’s case, s sentenced to life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
As reported, the cybercrimes are becoming more complex and better organized, said the spokesman of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, Wang Songmiao, adding that such crimes are more difficult to detect, and their consequences are becoming more serious.
Wang explained that prosecutors across the country are now making greater efforts to deal with telephone fraud, identity theft, illegal production, sale or use of malicious programs and equipment.
Zhang Xiangjun, deputy head of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, said that it becomes more difficult to combat cybercrime, because it is increasingly difficult to obtain evidence. Zhang explained that many of the illegal sites are located abroad, which also makes it difficult to investigate, especially the entire criminal chain.
In addition, new types of cybercrime are harder to define under current laws.
