Beijing. January 16. Silkroadnews -  A record number of tourists visited Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, in 2017, the Global Times newspaper reports.
“Lhasa, the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, received a record high of 16 million tourists from at home and abroad last year, or up 17.6 percent year on year,” the report said.
Revenues from tourism brought the historic center 22.74 billion yuan (about $3.5 billion).
The city is known for its rich historic heritage sites, such as the Potala Palace and Johang Temple. Last year, it improved its tourist accommodation, including hotels provision, installing movable toilets and a helicopter travel service, which enables tourists to have a bird’s-eye view of the city.
Lhasa plans to continue modernizing rural roads and building additional toilets in 2018. It is also planned to build a cultural park and open a national museum there.
