Activities on conservation of snow leopard in Kyrgyzstan will be carried out with the help of a single database
Almaty. September 29. Silkroadnews - Bishkek held its first working meeting on the launch of research works to determine the number of snow leopards in the Kyrgyz Republic, reports KyrTAG.
According to the report currently the snow leopard is endangered within the entire habitat. The main threats to the snow leopard population is poaching, illegal trade, reducing its food supply and habitat due to development of animal husbandry and economic development of mountainous areas.
To radically change the situation in Kyrgyzstan adopted and implemented the "National strategy for the conservation of the snow leopard", whose main objective is the preservation and restoration of habitat and the number of snow leopards in Kyrgyzstan. One task of this strategy is to assess the population of snow leopards in the country.
In the future, an important result of the joint work of all stakeholders will be the creation of a single database that will contain the latest information (based on the data obtained by camera traps of all partners working in the field, the survey of the local population, and others) and allow to plan conservation measures aimed the conservation of snow leopards in Kyrgyzstan.
According to experts, all the world has 3.5 thousand - 7.5 thousand snow leopards, Kyrgyzstan has about 250-300 individuals.
