ADB allocated additional $6.5 million to manage Pyanj River water resources in Tajikistan
Beijing. June 26. Silkroadnews - The Board of Directors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $6.5 million grant of additional funding for the current project to improve water management in the Pyanj River Basin, the largest river basin in Tajikistan, the Tajik Telegraph Agency (TajikTA) reported on Tuesday.
According to the ADB office in Tajikistan, the additional funding will be accompanied by a $5 million grant by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to be administered by ADB.
The additional funding follows the $30 million assistance approved by ADB in October 2016, including a grant and technical assistance to the amount of $5 million from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) for this project.
The Pyanj River Basin is vital for the economy and development of Tajikistan, Nathan Rive, an ADB expert on climate change in Central and West Asia, says, yet, here one of the poorest and most climate-vulnerable communities in the world live.
The $6.5 million grant will help expand the scope of the current ADB water management project in the Pyanj River basin and help modernize the new operational center for the Tajik hydrometeorology agency, and update the legal and organizational structure of the meteorological office to improve water management and reduce risk of disasters for communities living along the Pyanj River basin.
In addition to the ADB and GCF grants, the government of Tajikistan also allocates $1.3 million for this project. The project, as expected, will be completed in mid-2023.
