Afghan authorities appeal to the international community for assistance in fighting against drug trafficking

Almaty. April 20. Silkroadnews – The Afghan authorities call upon the international community to assist in the implementation of a new plan to fight against drug trafficking, such a statement was made by the Minister of Counter Narcotics of Afghanistan Salamat Azimi at the 30th session of the UN General Assembly on the world drug problem, Russian mass-media report.

According to him, the new plan to be introduced provides for the alternative measures for the country’s development, poppy cultivation areas eradication, arrests of drug dealers and smugglers, as well as the medical treatment of drug addicts.

“This plan realization will require a sustained and effective support from our donors in the international community. Without such support the drugs can cause serious problems not only for Afghanistan, but also for the countries all over the world,” S.Azimi said.

However, he did not specify exactly how many donors the country needs to implement the plan in case.
As reported on the website of the United Nations Information Centre, the UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said the ultimate goal of the international drug control conventions is to ensure the health and welfare of humankind.

In his turn, the executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime Yury Fedotov called on to promote a more inclusive strategy to fight against drug trafficking, based on the efforts in the field of human rights protection, health, security and sustainable development. According to him, along with strengthening the fight against the drug supply it is also necessary today to strive for drug consumption diminution.

Within next three days the meeting participants will discuss the implementation of the UN Political Declaration and Plan of Action on the world drug problem adopted at the 20th special session in 2009.
This special session on drugs is carried out only six months after the UN 2030 sustainable development goals’ approval.
