Almaty. July 12. Silkroadnews – Recent mass protests resulting in casualties have impelled the government of Afghanistan to start designing law on demonstrations regulation, Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports.
To remind, mass meetings that followed a major terrorist attack left five people dead and at least twenty injured. After that, the demonstrators set several tent camps in the city and at least two more picketers were killed during the crowd control activities by security forces.
Last week, Afghan media inform, the cabinet started discussing a bill developed by the country’s ministry of justice to prevent riots and civil disorders.
The current version of the project says the government has a right to prohibit demonstrations in certain areas and restrict picket camps setting for security reasons.
Organizers of public events are ordered to avoid blocking the roads, carry out actions at least 500 meters from military bases and at least 200 meters from government and educational institutions. Under security threats, they are recommended to be ready to dissolve the demonstrations and restrict the protest campaigns with three days.
In the future, the project may undergo changes, Ariana-TV reports referring to press office of the ministry of justice.
To come into force, the law should be approved by the parliament. Currently, many of the deputies and civil activists are critical of the bill, regarding it as a serious restriction of people’s rights and intention to suppress the oppositional attitudes within the country.
