On Monday, speaking to the parliament deputies the Chief of General Staff for the Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces LtGen Mohammad Sharif Yaftali said this is an overestimation of situation, Tolo news reported. In particular, he said, the Afghan officials suggest there are about 2,000 Islamic state militants in Afghanistan.
A similar statement was also made by Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Davlat Vaziri. Speaking to reporters he suggested that earlier the words of the diplomat would be close to truth, yet due to measures undertaken to fight the Daesh the situation has improved.
With this Yaftali and Vaziri have not agreed on the number of the group on the territory of the country, the Defense Ministry spokesman suggests the Daesh troops numbers in Afghanistan are measured in hundreds, not thousands.
To remind, recently Russia has been actively raising the issue of the Islamic state’s presence within the country. Currently, the group is expanding its activities in the north of Afghanistan. According to some reports, the IS also carries out the transfer of militants to Afghanistan from Syria and Iraq in effort to relocate its major bases.
