Almaty. January 6. Silkroadnews - According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Afghanistan, by 2020 the country will become self-sufficient in wheat production, AfTAG reports.
Mir Amanuddin Haidari, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, said the draft strategy for the country’s grain production development has been passed over to the President.
“The new policy within the industry shall raise the country’s wheat production volume. Currently Afghanistan produces 5,5 million tons of wheat a year while consuming 6 million tons. Thus, the country has to import wheat as well to meet one’s domestic needs”, A.Haidari noted.
Wheat is the core food product of people in Afghanistan, and the majority of farmers are involved in its production. According to the deputy minister, the new strategy and modern technologies introduction shall help Afghanistan to meet the domestic demand and even become a wheat exporter.
