“The order of Madagascar’s health authorities dated as of October 11, 2017, cancels vacations and leaves for physicians and nurses across the country due to the ongoing outbreak of the plague recorded in the country,” the statement on the department’s site said on Thursday.
According to official data, as of October 17, 805 cases and 74 deaths from the outbreak had been confirmed. The peculiarity of this outbreak is that, unlike in previous years, it is primarily spread in large cities. The epidemiologists of Madagascar warn the outbreak could last throughout April 2018.
The World Health Organization believes, the risk of spreading the plague to other countries is relatively low, and does not impose restrictions on tourists travel to Madagascar, the ministry’s officials said.
