Beijing. January 31. Silkroadnews - Beijing urged the international community to strengthen dialogue and cooperation on the basis of mutual trust to jointly cope with threats of cybersecurity, Xinhua reported.
“Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, in a daily news conference, sought cooperation after a senior U.S. official said on Sunday the U.S. government is considering a superfast 5G wireless network to counter the threat of spying by China on U.S. phone calls,” the report said.
This month, AT&T was forced to abandon plans to offer its customers handsets manufactured by China’s company Huawei Technologies Co after some members of the Congress lobbied the rejection of this idea.
In 2012, the U.S. conducted an investigation into China’s Huawei and ZTE Corp to check if their products could be used for espionage and whether it threatened the U.S. security.
China resolutely prohibits all forms of cyber-attacks and opposes them. The outbreak of the WannaCry cyber virus in May 2017 shows that cyber weapons are a global threat and the arms race in cyberspace could be grown. “We believe that the international community should, on the basis of mutual respect and trust, strengthen dialogue and cooperation and join hands in addressing the threat of cyberattacks to maintain the peace and stability of cyberspace,” the agency quoted Hua saying.
In turn, Wang Yiwei, a professor of international studies at Renmin University of China, noted that the United States has several goals.
“China and the U.S. are taking leading roles in the internet, so the U.S. sees China as its threat and rival,” Wang said.
According to him, under the pretext of combating threats to security, the United States is actually implementing protectionism for its domestic market.
“The U.S. cares deeply about the 5G market, but lost its monopoly status in the area, so the country is trying to catch up and remain vigilant against China,” he added.
