Almaty. May 18. Silkroadnews - Iran and Oman launched a new route for the delivery of goods by sea within the framework of transnational transport corridor "North-South" linking Central Asia with the Persian Gulf, transmits the Iranian News Agency (IrTAG).
For this reason, last week in the Iranian port of Shahid Rajai on the Persian Gulf, was held a solemn ceremony on the occasion of the first ship sent from Iran to the Omani port of Sohar.
At first the route "Shahid Rajai - Sohar" will run two container ships with a capacity of 200 TEU each, which will transport food, agricultural products and other perishable goods. In the initial stages the intensity of flights between the two ports will be twice a month, but in the future with increasing traffic, it can be set up to one flight a week.
It should be noted that the agreement on the opening of a new route of cargo transportation was signed during the visit of the Omani trade delegation to Iran in mid-April.
Recall, the government of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Oman have agreed to establish a transport corridor "Central Asia - Persian Gulf" in 2011. At the beginning of the year, its accession to the alliance announced Kazakhstan. Part of the transport and transit corridor will pass through the railway connecting Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and some - by sea from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas and Chabahar Shahid Rajai to the ports of Oman.
It is expected that the transport corridor will give a new impetus to economic development of the countries participating in the project, the creation of new jobs, the construction of social and industrial infrastructure to attract major foreign investment.
Thus, the volume of rail transport with the countries participating in the project in 2014 increased relative to 2013 by 2.3 million tons or 10% and amounted to more than 25 million tons of cargo.
Experts predict that by 2020 the volume of freight traffic between the two countries would reach more than 40 million tons per year.
