Beijing. February 26. Silkroadnews - By the next Winter Olympics in 2022 China will have more ski resorts than Europe, the Australian television channel ABC reports.
By the end of the year there will be 700 ski resorts in China - more than in Europe as a whole.
At Chongli, almost a four-hour drive north of Beijing hosting the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, there are the first-class ski resorts built to rival the best resorts of Europe and America.
In just two decades, China has built 646 resorts and is targeting to have 1000 by the Olympics to be held in February 2022.
Recently opened a new $5-billion resort Fulong in Chongli has 37 ski runs.
Just a few years ago, Chongli was one of China’s poorest regions, and now it becomes a center for ski tourism. Some doubted it could be a suitable place for the Winter Olympics, as it has very little snow level. To compare with Whistler in Canada, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, which gets an average of 11 meters, Chongli get only 20-70 centimeters of snow a year. Environmentalists also criticized the choice, because Chongli is a national park. This hasn’t stopped the authorities, and the construction of ski resorts continues at breakneck speed, snow machines work overtime producing snow, and skiing, as a sport, is actively promoted in the schools.
