China calls for increased representation of developing countries in the UN Security Council

Almaty. February 23. Silkroadnews - Permanent Representative of China to the UN Liu Jieyi said Security Council reform should give top priority to increasing the representation of developing countries, especially African countries, as well as enable more countries, the small and medium-sized countries in particular, gain more opportunities to serve in the council, Xinhua news agency reported.
    In his speech at the second session of the intergovernmental negotiations on the reform of the UN Security Council Liu Jieyi said the reform of the Security Council is a system work that touches on the interconnected issues. The intergovernmental negotiations should properly handle the relationship between the general and particular issues, consider all the specific questions about the reform, on the basis of the whole situation, build the conditions to achieve a broad consensus.
    He also emphasized, according to the provisions of the UN Charter the member-countries vest on the Security Council the primary responsibility for the international peace and security protection. On behalf of all the UN member states the Security Council have been doing this job. Over the 70 years since the establishment of the UN the number and composition of members of the organization have changed dramatically. The number of UN member states has grown from 51 to 193 and most of the newer members are developing countries, the small and medium-sized countries in particular. Most of the questions that have been considered or are considered by the UN Security Council, touches on for developing countries, especially in Africa. In this regard, Security Council reform shall reflect these realities through the increased representation of the developing countries in the UN Security Council, especially for Africa, as well as enable more countries, the small and medium-sized countries in particular, gain more opportunities to join the Security Council.
    Liu Jieyi stressed that China is always optimistic about the improvement of the UN Security Council working methods and supports the synthesis of positive experience of the UN Security Council, greater transparency and performance effectiveness. China is willing to work with all the parties involved to improve the activity by the UN Security Council, ensure the performance of the authority to protect the international peace and security.
