China has allocated $1 million to help Afghan refugees

Almaty. March 10. Silkroadnews – The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) received $1 million from the Chinese government to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghan refugees, Xinhua news agency reported.

“According to the agreement reached, on behalf of the PRC government UNHCR will work on purchase, transportation and distribution of humanitarian goods”, the report says.

Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Yao Jing noted that Afghanistan has suffered from heavy snowfalls and other natural disasters seriously affecting the living conditions of refugees and internally displaced persons.

As local media reports, since the beginning of the winter the extreme weather conditions in Afghanistan resulted in 239 deaths and 214 injuries. More than 520 residential buildings were destroyed. According to the UN, more than 9 million people in Afghanistan need urgent humanitarian assistance.
