Beijing. May 11. Silkroadnews - The Chinese authorities have launched a campaign against water pollution in cities, with inspection teams sent to the province to test the quality of pollution control, People’s Daily reports.
The first group of inspection teams have been delegated to inspect 20 cities in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hunan and Hubei. They will focus on the problem of wastewater and garbage disposal, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment said.
The campaign is aimed at speeding up the construction of due infrastructure and improving urban water supply, the ministry said.
According to the national action plan, China set a goal to eliminate 90% of wastewater and garbage discharges in major cities by the end of last year, and in smaller cities, discharges should be reduced by an average of 60%.
In May and June, the inspection teams will be sent to 36 major cities and some medium-sized cities, and a second check will be carried out at the end of the year.
The government took strict legislative measures to protect the environment and introduced a “river chief” system to protect water resources. In some regions, it is also planned to develop ecological “red lines” to enhance environmental protection.
