China launched a platform to track online rumors

Almaty. May 12. Silkroadnews – Ministry of Public Security and Sina Weibo microblog announced a launch of joint online platform to gather users’ complaints and tips on false online information and rumors, Xinhua news agency reports.

“Starting a platform where rumors could be quickly quashed meets the users’ need. The ministry tries to ensure internet security in a friendly manner,” said Shen Yi, deputy director of the cyberspace management center of Fudan University.

Such opinion is also shared by the expert of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications Xie Yongjiang.
“In the struggle with the online rumors such a platform is very important. It reminds netizens that internet is not a platform for lawlessness. Disseminating false information can easily cause panic in society,” he said.

This is not the first measure the Chinese authorities undertake to combat the unverified online information. Earlier, the Chinese State Chancellery Affairs online information announced tightening control over online information portals. Violations considered in this regard mean posting of false information, pornography, rumors.
