Almaty. December 25. Silkroadnews - China has “reasonably” expanded its islands in the South China Sea, online information portal Today Online said.
“China has “reasonably” expanded its islands in the disputed South China Sea and this year construction projects there including radar facilities covered about 290,000 square meters,” the report reads.
It is noted that China has conducted extensive work on reclamation of land on some of the islands and reefs that it controls in the South China Sea, including construction of airports, which caused concern among neighboring countries and Washington.
According to Beijing, this work will help to provide international services, such as search and rescue, although it is possible to use it for military purposes as well. With this China stressed that on its territory it can do whatever it wants.
A new report published on the website of China’s National Marine Data and Information Service says that the country has expanded its military presence in the South China Sea and “reasonably” expanded the area of the islands. It is reported that a complex called the “large radar” was set on the islands along with underground storage and administrative facilities. The number of military patrols was also increased.
Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies states, China has increased the area of the Spratly and Paracel Islands, the territory of which is disputed by several Asian neighbors.
“More than US$5 trillion (S$6.72 trillion) of world trade is shipped through the South China Sea every year. Besides China's territorial claims in the area, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan have rival claims,” the report said.
