Beijing. March 12. Silkroadnews - China’s parliament puts Xi Jinping on course to rule for life. The constitutional amendment was passed in the parliament with 2,958 in favour, two against and three abstentions, SBS News reports.
“This is the urgent wish of the common people,” the agency quoted Ju Xiuqin, a delegate from the north-eastern province of Heilongjiang, saying echoing the party’s words that the amendment to the constitution had been unanimously supported by the people.
Despite the fact that officially the number of terms of the presidency was not limited by legislation, two previous presidents of China resigned after two five-year terms.
Xi, 64, took his position in 2012. He gained popularity among the Chinese people due to the relentless fight against corruption bringing more than one million party officials to justice.
“Xi Jinping has presided over so many important projects such as economic reforms and the fight against corruption. There was a consensus that we supported him having more time to finish his work,” Dou Yanli, a delegate from Shandong province, said.
