Almaty. December 26. Silkroadnews China sentenced a blogger to 8 years in prison for subversive activities, Nasdaq news portal reports.
“China sentenced a prominent rights activist to eight years in jail for subversion. His lawyer said, the harshest sentence to be passed so far in a government crackdown on activism that began more than two years ago,” the report said.
Wu Gan, a blogger, better known by his nickname “Super Vulgar Butcher”, regularly spoke on the abuse of government power, both online and picketing on the streets. He was detained in May 2015 and then charged with subversive activities.
According to the court report, Wu criticized China’s political system online and used performances to create disturbances, insulting citizens and spreading false information.
“He carried out a string of criminal actions to subvert state power and overthrow the socialist system and seriously harmed state security and social stability,” the agency quoted court’s statement.
Before his arrest on his blog, Wu questioned the official version of the events in which a police officer shot a petitioner at a railway station in one of the northern provinces in May 2015.
The verdict was announced the day after the Catholic Christmas to attract less attention from diplomats and international observers.
