Almaty. November 2. Silkroadnews - China still wants to cooperate with the U.S. in combating climate change, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported.
China's Special Representative on Climate Change Xie Zhenhua said that his country still wants to cooperate with the United States on climate change and hopes an upcoming meeting on the issue in Germany will produce a draft agreement on implementing the Paris climate accord, the report said.
He also noted, China wants to boost joint efforts in the field of clean energy, reducing CO2 emissions and scientific research.
Despite Trump’s statement on the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris agreement, the United States will continue to participate in international meetings and negotiations on current and future agreements on climate change. The next meeting will be held in Bonn, Germany, next month. The US can officially withdraw from the Paris agreement not earlier than November 4, 2020 - the day after the next presidential election.
It is reported that China is the world’s largest consumer of coal and ranks first in the world emission of greenhouse gases that change the climate. However, through the Paris Agreement realization China plans to peak its greenhouse gas emissions no later than 2030 with further decline of emissions.
The PRC government has canceled the planned construction of more than 100 new coal-fired power plants and plans to invest at least $360 billion in green energy projects by the end of the decade. By 2016, coal consumption in the country declined for the third consecutive year, but again increased slightly in 2017.
