China to launch several international mega science projects
Beijing. April 5. Silkroadnews - China has every opportunity to help solve the world’s major scientific problems, the newspaper China Daily writes.
In the future, China will start developing several international mega science and engineering projects, some of which will be global projects led by China, aimed at solving the world’s most difficult scientific problems.
By 2020, China plans to start developing three to five of these mega-scientific projects, and by 2035 to add another 6 to 10 such projects.
The projects typically require huge investments, expensive equipment, complex experiments, decades of research and many interdisciplinary experts from different countries.
The projects will be selected on the basis of how viable they are, organized and advanced, the report cites Ye Dongbai, general director of the Department for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the PRC.
“These types of projects are crucial for the world’s innovation and progress, but are often too difficult for a single country to undertake,” he said.
The projects will include research on the human genome, international thermonuclear experimental reactors, international ocean research, and others.
“China has been participating in some of these major projects since the 1980s,” Ye Dongbai noted.
According to him, some of the megaprojects under the leadership of China will use state-owned laboratories and world-class scientific equipment.
Luo Delong, director of the China International Nuclear Fusion Energy Program Execution Center, said these mega projects might not bear fruit in 20 or even 50 years, but when it does, it will fundamentally change the world.
