Beijing. June 19. Silkroadnews- Chinese scientists have identified a gene responsible for primary familial brain calcification, China Plus reports.
Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC) is a neurological disease common among the elderly. Symptoms include difficulties in walking and talking.
Researchers of the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, the Institute of Neuroscience and the State Key Neuroscience Laboratory, together with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have identified a new MYORG gene that encodes a protein consisting of 714 amino acids.
After experiments in mice, it was found that the gene is recessive, while other known PFBC genes are dominant.
In 2012, researchers from Huazhong University of Science and Technology discovered the first gene that causes PFBC. However, more than 50% of genetic factors are still unclear.
The information on the new finding was published in the journal Neuron.
