Church of the Holy Sepulcher has been shut in Jerusalem
Beijing. February 26. Silkroadnews - The Church of the Holy Sepulcher has been shut in Jerusalem as a protest for the first time in 100 years, the Kazakh Telegraph Agency (KazTAG) reports with reference to BBC Russian service.
On Sunday Christianity’s ‘holiest site’ - the Church of the Holy Sepulcher - in Jerusalem shut its doors to protest changes in Israel’s tax laws and a proposed property law that could allow the state to seize land from the church, representatives of the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Church said on Monday.
The church, as noted, is being shared by several Christian faiths: mainly Greek-Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Armenian, and to a lesser degree - the Coptic Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox and Ethiopian Tewahedo.
However, the supporters of the bill suggest the fears of Christians are not justified.
The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is considered to be one of the world’s holiest sites for Christians. Many believe the church had been built on the site where Jesus Christ rose from the dead.
Every year, the church is visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world and this is the first time, since 1900, when it has been shut due to political reasons.
