Almaty. December 20. Silkroadnews - China’s Consulate in Australia warned its citizens on dangers of anti-Chinese attacks, “People’s Daily” newspaper reported.
“The Chinese consulate-general in Melbourne issued a warning to Chinese students, encouraging them to take more safety precautions amid increasing attacks and insults targeting Chinese nationals in Australia,” the report reads.
“Recently, attacks and insults targeting Chinese students have occurred in different places in Australia, therefore we warn all Chinese students in Australia to keep alert of possible danger and call the police and embassy if such incidents occur,” the statement said.
These warnings seem to be the last countermeasure of the Chinese authorities against several anti-China incidents that occurred recently in Australia. Earlier in July, racist flyers directed against Chinese students were found at two universities in Melbourne saying the Chinese students are not allowed to entering the campus territory under the threat of deportation. In October, in Canberra, an attack was carried out on Chinese students, as a result one person was hospitalized. The attack aroused indignation of the Chinese community in Australia.
“Over the past 11 months, some Australian politicians and media have been obsessed with one thing, that is, criticizing China...Some Australian political figures and media are going even further to hype Chinese resentment and China containment,” the consulate’s official website said in early December.
The consulate’s warning quickly became viral in Chinese social networks. A relevant post of “People’s Daily” on Twitter has gathered more than 1,000 likes and 600 comments within 30 minutes, with many Chinese Internet users criticizing the Australian authorities for tolerating such racist actions.
Reportedly, about 200,000 Chinese students study at Australian universities and schools, which is a good source of funding for these Australian institutions.
