Almaty. August 3. Silkroadnews – Since the beginning of operation against the “Taliban” militants in 2001 the U.S. has spent $39 billion to build and train the Afghan army, TASS writes with reference to report by information portal “Washington Free Beacon”.

“The United States spent more than $17 billion to provide the Afghan forces with arms, ammunition and military equipment. As a total, on June 30, 2016, the United States pledged to allocate $40.1 billion and has provided $39 billion to build, train and maintain the army of Afghanistan”, the article says referring to the report by the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction John Sopko.

“The number of Afghan security forces is getting reduced, despite the billions of military aid from the United States”, “Washington Free Beacon” writes. The fact is, as the portal explains, “this year’s fall in the number of Afghans entering the army against the background of “Taliban” movement revival in the country”.

As of May 31, 2016, Washington “has spent about $13 billion on the arms for the Afghan National Army and another $4.2 billion for weapons for the country’s police”.

“While the U.S. continues to allocate huge amounts of aid out of taxpayers’ funds to this war-torn country, the latter’s security forces capacity continues to decrease, thus, putting in doubt the possibility of a full transfer of control over the country’s security from the U.S. troops and their allies”, the portal notes.

According to the report, as of April 2016 there were 319 595 militants in the national army and security forces.
“This is a significant reduction compared to the February 2014 data saying about 338 108 militants.  And the number continues to fall”, J. Sopko said.

Thus, as of May 20, 2016, the number of Afghan army forces amounted to 171 428 militants, which is 8 083 militants less compared to January of this year.
