Dispute over Chinese aluminum foil export could affect relationship between China and US
Almaty. August 11. Silkroadnews – China warned the US that the dispute over the export of aluminum foil from the PRC could have a negative impact on relations between the two countries, CNN reported.
“China has told the Trump administration to tread carefully in a spat over aluminum exports if it wants to avoid damaging the relationship between the world’s two largest economies. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Thursday disputed U.S. suggestions that Chinese aluminum foil shipments are unfairly subsidized”, the report reads.
It is explained that U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross this week announced a preliminary decision to raise the duties on aluminum foil from China as much as 81% due to alleged subsidies from the Chinese government.
In their statement the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stressed that the US claims were “without foundation”.
“China urges the U.S. to act cautiously and make a fair decision to avoid any negative impact on the normal economic and trade exchanges between China and the U.S.”, the news agency quoted ministry saying.
In its turn, the U.S. Commerce Department said introduction of the duty on Chinese aluminum foil is not related to the April investigation of the impact of aluminum imports on US national security, the results of which have not been announced.
The decision to impose the duty followed the complaint by the Aluminum Association, a group of American aluminum foil producers, saying that more than 230 Chinese companies were involved in dumping aluminium on the U.S. market.
According to the publication, in 2016, aluminum foil imports from China were worth nearly $389 million.
It is reported the U.S. will announce its final decision on the case on October 23.
