Almaty. September 14. Silkroadnews – Due to increase in China’s export of books there is growing need for highly qualified translators, Singapore newspaper The Straits Times reported.
“China will export more publications to other countries, both in print and digital formats, to further expand its visibility, officials said. And it could do with more translators,” the report says.
It is noted that from 2012 to 2016, China sold more than 50 thousand publication copyrights. Over the same period, the sale of rights to publish Chinese books abroad increased by 30%.
It is reported that 6.4 million copies of “Xi Jinping: The Governance of China” have been sold worldwide in 22 languages.
Nevertheless, it is noted that despite all the efforts to introduce Chinese books in other countries, just few of them had a significant impact on foreign readers. One of the main reasons behind this is a lack of qualified translators.
According to Ms Cui Yuing, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and vice-minister of the State Council Information Office, the government should do more to train and attract talented competent translators to China.
“We could increase compensation for outstanding translators, and provide bigger subsidies for books translated from Chinese. We encourage foreign students in China, as well as those who live and work in China for long periods, to be passionate about Chinese culture, and to take up the translation of Chinese books,” the agency quoted her saying.
The largest online bookstore Amazon is reported to have more than 673 000 titles in its section of the Chinese books. Exclusive shelves for Chinese books have been created in major bookstores in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, as well as in 27 bookstores of Nishan House, open by the Chinese franchise in North and South America, Oceania and Africa.
