Almaty. September 22. Silkroadnews - Dunhuang and Chzhitszindun caves of China are included in the global network of Geoparks of UNESCO, reported the press service of the organization.
"On the 4th international conference on geoparks of Asia-Pacific region, which was held from 16 to 20 September in the Sanin Kaigan Geopark in Japan, nine new projects were included in the Global Geoparks Network, which is supported by UNESCO", - said in a statement.
Today a global network of geoparks includes 120 facilities in 33 countries. The new objects are: Dunhuang (China), caves of Chzhitszindun (China), Troodos (Cyprus), Lanzarote and the archipelago Chiniho (Spain), Sitia (Greece), Gunung Seva (Indonesia), Reykjanes (Iceland), Pollino (Italy), Apoi Mountain (Japan).
Geoparks - are areas that represent the geological diversity and promote sustainable regional development based on local initiatives. They draw attention to a potentially dangerous geological phenomena and, in many cases, help local communities to develop strategies to mitigate natural hazards. Geoparks reveal the geological history of the Earth, numbering more than 4.6 billion years old, as well as give an idea of ​​the geological diversity that shaped every aspect of our lives and our society.
