Federica Mogherini to take part in meeting of ministers in format “European Union - Central Asia” in Samarkand

Almaty. November 10. Silkroadnews - On November 10 the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini and European Union Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica will attend the 13th annual meeting of foreign ministers in format “European Union-Central Asia” hosted in Samarkand, the Uzbek Telegraph Agency (UzTAG) reports.
On the eve of the visit, the EC vice-president F. Mogherini said, Central Asia is a strategically important region for the European Union. As for security issues and fighting against radicalization and extremism, as well as trade and support of civil society, the EU and the countries of the region are strong partners.
Commissioner Mimica noted that the European Union is a key partner for the countries of Central Asia, ready to further strengthen its presence in the region. The EU’s contribution of 1.2 billion euros, calculated until 2020, is aimed at sustainable development in the region. Together with its partners in Central Asia the EU encourages initiatives aimed at creating jobs, effective management, assistance in managing borders and water resources, as well as improving the education and healthcare system.
The foreign ministers’ meeting in format “European Union-Central Asia” will address such issues as security, economic development, politics, as well as the role of the European Union in the region.
Along with a number of bilateral meetings, in particular, with the Foreign Ministers of the countries of Central Asia, Federica Mogherini’s visit program also scheduled meeting with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
