FIFA has opened an official account in Chinese equivalent of Twitter
Beijing. March 14. Silkroadnews - FIFA, football’s world governing body, ramped up its presence in China by launching an account on Weibo, the country's equivalent of Twitter which has 392 million monthly active users, Channel News Asia reported.
China never won or hosted the World Cup, but President Xi Jinping is a football fan and promised the world’s most populous country will do both.
The @FIFA account on Weibo appeared despite the fact that China will not take part in the World Cup this year in Russia.
“FIFA is very excited to launch its digital presence in China where social media is an important means of communication, especially with young people,” FIFA Chief Commercial Officer Philippe Le Floc’h said in a statement.
Numerous European football clubs and star players will be able to use Weibo as a means of communicating with football fans in China, where sports are developing rapidly, but Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are banned, the report said.
