Beijing. February 7. Silkroadnews - The first batch of New Zealand avocados has been delivered to China, the New Zealand Herald reports.
“The first airfreighted consignment of fresh New Zealand avocados has landed in China, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) said,” the report reads.
According to Martyn Dunne, the ministry director general, the export of avocados to China is a top priority for the horticulture industry.
“Granting of avocado access is the culmination of substantial work and negotiation over a number of years between New Zealand and China, and we're excited to reach this milestone,” the agency quoted him saying.
In recent years, New Zealand has been harvesting large quantities of avocado.
In 2016/17, New Zealand exported $155.5 million worth of avocados to markets in various countries, including Australia, Japan, Singapore, Korea and Thailand, a $64 million growth compared to the previous season.
In the export of fruit to China, New Zealand will compete with Mexico, Peru and Chile, the only countries that currently export such fruits.
“Horticulture has been on a steep growth trajectory in recent years, driven mostly by a strong performance from the kiwifruit and apple export sectors,” the report reads.
