Beijing. March 5. Silkroadnews - Kristin Rose-Möhring, the equal opportunity commissioner for Germany’s Family Ministry, called to revise the text of the German anthem to make it more gender neutral, the Kazakh Telegraph Agency (KazTAG) reports citing Lenta.ru.
The proposal she put forward on the report was timed to the International Women’s Day. The politician believes that the phrase “brotherly with heart and hand” should be replaced with “courageously with heart and hand”, and the word “homeland” should be used instead of the “fatherland”, a statement published on Monday said.
Rose-Möhring also reminded Austria’s example, where the national anthem’s lyrics was changed in 2012 referring to both daughters and sons, instead of only referring to the country’s “great sons.”
In early February, Canada also approved changes to its anthem removing gender-specific terms, and phrase “True patriot love in all thy sons command” was replaced with “True patriot love in all of us command.”
The original text on which the national anthem of Germany is based on were written by German poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841. Since 1991, only the third stanza of the poem is used.
