Almaty. September 16. Silkroadnews – Global stocks of nuclear weapons are at their lowest point in over half a century, the joint statement on the results of the recent seventh Washington conference on the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) implementation says, TASS reports.

«The P5 noted that global stocks of nuclear weapons are now at their lowest point in over half a century as the result of unprecedented efforts on the part of nuclear weapon states», the statement says.

The participants also «underlined the need to pursue further efforts in the sphere of nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament». Such efforts, they believe, will «promote international security and stability».

The P5 also «welcomed and reaffirmed their commitment to the full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)».

«Successful implementation of this JCPOA will ensure that Iran's nuclear program is and remains exclusively peaceful and will enable Iran to fully enjoy its right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes», the statement underlines.

The P5 called for «full implementation of all commitments pursuant to the JCPOA» and «expressed their strong support for the IAEA's (International Atomic Energy Agency) essential and independent role.

It is noted that the conference in Washington was held with participation of representatives of the permanent members of the Security Council P5 (Russia, UK, China, US and France).

The JCPOA was signed in Vienna on July 14, 2015. January 16, 2016, marked the JCPOA implementation day. This plan provides for removal of sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program by the UN Security Council, US and EU, with Tehran committed to restrain its nuclear activities putting it under international control.
