Almaty. December 14. Silkroadnews - Google opens artificial intelligence research center in China, Reuters reports.
“Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google said it is opening an artificial intelligence (AI) research center in China to target the country’s local talent, even as the U.S. search firm’s products remain blocked in the country,” the report said.
Google said the research center is the first of its kind in Asia, a small team of professionals will work in its office in Beijing. Chinese politicians have voiced strong support for research and development of AI in the country, but over the past year have introduced increasingly strict rules for foreign firms.
Google’s search engine, its application stores, e-mail and cloud storage services are prohibited in China. China’s regulatory authorities say the restrictions on foreign media and Internet platforms are designed to block the influence that threatens stability and socialist ideas.
Although the tightening of restrictions is likely to prevent Google from returning to the Chinese market, the company increasingly focuses on presenting its AI products in China.
According to Google, the new Chinese AI research center will join the list of similar overseas centers operating in New York, Toronto, London and Zurich.
