Almaty. October 22. Silkroadnews - The growth of drug production in Afghanistan shows the ineffectiveness of anti-drug programs in Afghanistan, reports AfTAG with reference to the Report of the Special Inspector General for the restoration of the IRA (SIGAR) John Sopko.
Volumes of production of opium poppy cultivation in the country over the past year reached a record value. And this despite the fact that by June of this year, US-funded anti-Afghan drug program amounting $ 7.6 billion. Total area of opium poppy cultivation in the country last year reached 209 thousand hectares, exceeding the record in 2007 - 193 thousand hectares.
According to the report, in several provinces of Afghanistan, previously considered to be free from drug crops, was resumed illicit crop cultivation.
Head of SIGAR United States called on the authorities to take into account all of these factors in the development of anti-drug programs.
