Almaty. July 1. Silkroadnews – Pentagon chief Jim Mattis suggested NATO states to finish their job in Afghanistan because of risk of the terrorist revenge, The Japan News reported.
"The head of the Pentagon, Jim Mattis, suggested NATO allies to finish their job in Afghanistan because of the threat of revenge on the part of terrorists, as the alliance states intend to build up further military presence to confront the Taliban”, the publication reads.
With this J. Mattis, however, refused to give the exact number of troops US President Donald Trump would commit under a new strategy, just two years after NATO officially ended its mission in Afghanistan.
Reportedly, the recent Taliban gains raised some fears among NATO members.
“Recent Taliban gains have shaken confidence in the future of Afghanistan and sparked talk that sending NATO troops there could drag the allies into a long war facing new threats, such as terrorism and cyberattacks”, the publication says.
According to the publication, at present there are 13500 troops of NATO states allocated in Afghanistan to train, advise and assist the Afghan armed forces. Diplomatic sources report strengthening of military contingent by another 3000 troops is under consideration, while the US officials say about “around 4000”.
